Charles Bar Mitzvah at The Mark was an absolute blast! The service was held here as well and after the great job Charles did, and fun parent speeches to a standing room only crowd, the venue was quickly transformed to a fun party space. Robert of The Dream Team had everyone up on the dance floor all night, there was a great graffiti wall, flip books, jewelry and a delish candy bar. The decor had a cool California vibe to it thanks to the always wonderful Nina of Nina Bracker Events.

Tyler's early morning Bar Mitzvah service in Malibu, right across Pacific Coast Highway from the sparkling Pacific Ocean, went smooth as silk. From the beautiful spring weather just outside the glass walls of Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue, to the service, and his flawless Torah portion. By the time the amazing lunch at Nobu came around, everyone was enjoying Tyler's accomplishment and celebrated in true Malibu, California style!

Jordan is one of those young men that you just watch and think his parents have got to be so proud. Such a kind spirit and amazing talent with music, art, writing... and a great middle brother to two more boys. I really enjoyed capturing his celebration recently at Sinai Temple and later that evening at East where his friends and family gathered in a cool Hollywood club atmosphere. (And were all the vendors and wait staff wore shirts with his self-portrait.)

Zach and I share the same birthday so of course I think he is awesome. When his mom told me he is a hockey player and huge LA Kings fan, I knew exactly where to photograph him for some Bar Mitzvah portraits that we'll use on his personal web site. Aaron's Tropicana themed Bar Mitzvah was such fun. Jackie of The Korman Group did a great job turning Temple Aliyah into a tropical nightclub and "You Think I'm Crazy" DJ's had everyone dancing all night!

What better place to host a football themed Bar Mitzvah then at a local college. And although they are a USC family, UCLA proved to be the perfect venue for Jacob's event. (Go UCLA!!!) Karen and her crew of Karen's Kreations did a great job pulling in all the football themed elements and a fab candy bar display!!! And Check One 2 kept everyone on their feet all night, with a special performance by Jacob's cousin.
As a surprise to Jacob, Chris Hale of the Buffalo Bills showed up during cocktail hour and stayed the night (don't worry, Chris got his rings back!)
This was a great idea for a candle lighting ceremony. Everyone got light up candles and they all got turned on during Jacob's speech...

When I'm scheduled to shoot a Mitzvah, the portrait session months beforehand is such a fun opportunity for me to get to know the kids and what they are into. Jordan seems to have so many interests, so I just tagged along through his home capturing a bit of everything. And of course when you live in Manhattan Beach, heading to the ocean for a few family shots is a must.

...when I turned around and saw these two cuties and had to do a few of mom and dad too.

Jared seemed to have a blast at his recent Bar Mitzvah at Glendale's Temple Sinai. Again, fabulous stain glass, which I just love! Jared did amazing during his Torah reading! Really impressive! I had photographed his cousin's Bar Mitzvah last year so it was nice seeing so many familiar faces at the evening party, rocked out by Seth over at You Should Be Dancing. (Delicious, creative food by The Spot Gourmet)

I had the great fortune of shooting the B'nai Mitzvah of these gorgeous cousins recently. They were so fun and photogenic! And the Northridge location of their ceremony was to die for, with light streaming in from walls of windows on three sides. But what struck me the most was the enormous family turnout from across the nation and a room this vast filled with so much love for Emma and Griffin.
The kids moms, Cathy and Stacey, did an amazing job planning this event and all the details. Cathy was also the officiant. I was already a fan of hers after seeing her at another Bar Mitzvah, but seeing her do her own daughter and nephews ceremony was so touching.
I love the tradition of throwing candy at a Mitzvah, to wish the boy/girl a "sweet" life as they make the transition to adulthood. It always makes for fun photos.
Emma and Griffin's party was a fun luncheon with music going all day while the kids ran around doing various activities and eating great food from Rita's Gourmet Catering and bread from Homeboy Industries bakery. (Rita had some of the best mac and cheese I've had! I highly recommend them!) And of course there was a candy bar. Yea! (Love the toothbrush idea!)
A fun photo booth and glitter tattoos kept the kids busy.

It's hard to not be excited to photograph a good looking kid on his Bar Mitzvah day. Especially when the family is wonderful and the kids go crazy on the dance floor. Jacob's recent Bar Mitzvah, at the Woodland Hills Maggiano's, started off with an intimate, morning service by the fabulous Cathy Gordon, and lead into a fun luncheon with a great DJ that had everyone celebrating throughout the afternoon.

And I love the edible table number idea that Jacob's mom had...
I love the way Jacob did his candle lighting ceremony. He didn't want to leave anyone out, so everyone got an electronic candle and as he talked about certain groups, they would turn they candle on and at the end, the whole room was lit up!
Real Genius Entertainment did a great job DJ'ing and entertaining everyone!
I'm pretty sure that Willow Smith's "Whip my Hair" was on at this point...
I think it's safe to say Jacob had a great time! Mazel Tov!

I recently had the opportunity to photograph the Bar Mitzvah of a friend of mine who I went to high school with. That would normally make me feel old but I seem to be doing a lot of these lately and it just makes me feel like I live in a smaller town then I really do. I guess that's what happens when you don't move away from where you grew up!
I also loved that Congregation Or Ami allows photographers to shoot during the ceremony, which is such a bonus for the parents as I can give them a larger variety of photos for their albums. Images that really tell the story of the whole event.
After the morning service, we headed over to the Woodland Hills Maggiano's for a luncheon and some fun on the dance floor. Jodi designed Jack's invitations herself and I loved the vintagy theme. Music by The Party Zone.

I've been playing around in my head for a fun way to do a recap of the year combined with a contest. So it looks like I'm starting the 1st Annual Karen Ard Photography Image of the Year Contest!
The winner in each category will receive an 11x14 canvas wrap! Two runners up will both receive a $50 gift credit toward a 2011 session!

- Voting runs through January 31 at midnight, Pacific time
- No multiple voting! Your IP is captured and only unique votes will count
- Send the link to your friends and family so they can vote for you
- Winners will be announced on February 1
- I reserve the right to cancel the contest or disqualify an entry if necessary

It's so great taking photos with a family of actors. Every time my camera clicked everyone struck another pose. The only thing better would be shooting Tyra Banks herself!
Lily's Bat Mitzvah is coming up soon so we got together recently to get some portraits done of her and her family, minus big sis, plus one dog, who was not pleased with the attention at all.
We did a series of funny shots that Lily's mom has an idea for. Can't wait to see what she does with them.

Halloween was the perfect theme for David's recent October Bar Mitzvah. His parents did such a great job with the decor but first, some photos from the ceremony at Chabad of West Hills. I always find the Tefillin ceremony so moving.
David's party was at the Woodland Hills Hilton Hotel and the kids had a blast with all the cool Halloween decorations. I loved the DIY decorations and killer candy bar!

I had a great time photographing Jeffrey for his Bar Mitzvah portraits earlier this week. He loves the beach and boogie boarding so it made perfect sense to head down to the ocean for these. We got an amazing, sunny morning and he was a perfect model.

Last week Jake had his Bar Mitzvah at Temple Chabad. (You may recall our portrait session a few weeks back.) It was a full day of ceremony and celebration. Although I was only able to take photos at the rehearsal, I hear the service was wonderful, after which I met up with them for some family portraits then onto the Braemar Country Club that night for the reception.
Jake's uncle Rob was a huge part of Jake's Bar Mitzvah and that is his great-grandmother, mother and little brother beaming so proudly!
The event planner Jackie of The Korman Group, along with Cindy at SRO Events, pulled out all the stops transforming Braemar into an X-Games themed venue.
Needless to say, the Laker Girls were a huge hit!
During the already emotional candle lighting ceremony, Jake was presented with his black belt. Quite a night.
Besides an airbrush artist, a tattoo artist and the very cool Dancing Heads as entertainment, there was an awesome candy bar that seemed like a mile long from Nina Bracker Events.
