In October of 2016, my family and I rented an RV and traveled south on 1-10, from Los Angeles to New Mexico. A thirteen hour journey that had been on my to do list for quite some time. Not the driving-for-thirteen-hours part, but the RV road trip and our first destination: the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
Our road trip in total would encompass eight days, six states and approximately 2100 miles. The whole journey allowed me to check off many items on my bucket list. I had always wondered about the experience of traveling in an RV, and renting one was the smart way to go for us first timers. After doing a little homework, we choose a 24 footer from Cruise America and didn’t have any issues with their vehicle the entire time.
We drove through the night, my daughter and I learning how to sleep while flying down the highway, in an often bumpy bed, as my husband navigated us out of California. I took over somewhere in New Mexico and drove us into the rising sun as we reached Albuquerque and our friends who awaited us there.
Day 1: After relaxing after the long drive and visiting with our friends, we all headed out to Santa Fe for the day. I’ve never seen such deep blue skies before!
Day 2: We got up super early to spend the day at the 44th annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. I suggest getting there before 6am for the Dawn Patrol Show, a choreographed inflation and launch that’s been part of the Balloon Fiesta since 1996. And I can’t even tell you what it’s like to watch the mass ascension of hundreds and hundreds of hot air balloons in all different shapes, colors and sizes. Really an incredible sight to behold. Food, music, pow wows, clothes, fireworks… it’s all there.
The 2017 Balloon Fiesta runs from October 7-15, incase this is on your bucket list too.
